Open your Bible and read James 4:11–17 slowly.
Mark what James says about speaking against a brother, judging, the law, the Lawgiver, tomorrow, life, the Lord’s will, boasting, and the sin of omission.
Faith submits both speech and plans to God.
James confronts two forms of presumption. One man speaks as though he owns the judgment seat. Another plans as though he owns tomorrow. Both forget their place before God.
James presses two questions into the heart:
“Who are you who judge your neighbor?”
And:
“What is your life?”
The first question humbles our speech.
The second question humbles our plans.
James 4:11–12
James forbids speaking against a brother. The one who judges his brother sets himself against the law and forgets that there is only one Lawgiver and Judge.
James 4:13–14
James rebukes arrogant planning that speaks confidently about tomorrow while forgetting that life is a vapor.
James 4:15
The right posture says, “If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.”
James 4:16
Boasting in arrogance is evil.
James 4:17
Knowing the right thing and refusing to do it is sin.

| Exalts self over others | Exalts self over tomorrow |
| Must be humbled before God | Must be humbled before God |

James does not condemn all moral discernment.
He condemns the proud, slanderous, self-exalting judgment that speaks against a brother and forgets God’s place as Lawgiver and Judge.
He also does not condemn planning.
He condemns planning that leaves God out, talks like tomorrow is guaranteed, and boasts as though human life is more than vapor.
James forbids speaking against a brother.
Where can sinful judgment hide behind concern, analysis, or “just being honest”?

James is not giving a religious slogan. He is teaching a posture before God.
What does it look like to plan with real submission to the Lord?

James says the one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it sins.
Why is refusing known obedience still sin, even when it looks passive?

James humbles the mouth and the calendar.
God owns the judgment seat.
God owns tomorrow.
