1. Human Advantage Does Not Guarantee the Outcome — Ecclesiastes 9:11
Speed, strength, wisdom, skill, and ability are real gifts, but none of them owns the result. One verse earlier the Preacher commanded hard work (9:10); here he refuses to let a man trust his advantage as if it controlled the outcome.
Question: Why does the Preacher name five real advantages and then deny each one a guaranteed result?
Follow-up: How does Jeremiah 9:23–24 redirect the boasting of the wise, the mighty, and the rich?
Key Insight: You are responsible to be faithful, not sovereign over the result.
2. Time and Chance Overtake Every Human Plan — Ecclesiastes 9:11–12
“Time” is the moment that arrives; “chance” is the event that enters the plan. This is not blind luck in a godless world but life seen from man’s side, under the sun. Man does not know his time, and the net falls suddenly on the fish that never expected it.
Question: How is “time and chance” different from blind, godless luck?
Follow-up: Why does “man does not know his time” humble every calendar and five-year plan?
Key Insight: Fear God before the net falls.
3. The Wise Response: Faithful Obedience Before God — Ecclesiastes 9:10; 12:13–14
Uncertainty does not excuse half-hearted work. The fool trusts his work to secure the future; the wise man works and trusts God with it. The book ends not in gloom but in duty: fear God, keep His commandments, and leave the outcome and the judgment to Him.
Question: How does Ecclesiastes 11:4 expose the excuse of waiting for perfect conditions?
Follow-up: Why is “fear God and keep His commandments” the true answer to an uncertain future?
Error to Reject: Certainty about what God never promised—the trip, the year, the profit—is presumption, not faith.
Word Study
ʿēt (time) — an appointed season or fitting moment that arrives whether or not man foresees it.
pegaʿ (chance) — an occurrence or encounter that “meets” a man; an event under God’s rule, not luck detached from Him.
Application
- For the individual: Stop measuring your peace by how much control you think you hold. Plan and work, but rest your soul on God, not on speed, money, timing, or recognition.
- For the church: Labor, teach, give, and evangelize with all your might, yet never rest the church’s future on our cleverness. God gives the increase and opens or closes the doors.
- For the anxious: Unseen is not ungoverned. You may not see the snare, but God sees the whole field.
- For parents: Teach diligence without the worship of achievement; let your children see you pray first and accept closed doors without bitterness.
- For the sinner: Your tomorrow is uncertain, but the day of judgment is fixed (Acts 17:30–31). Come to Christ in obedient faith: hear, believe, repent, confess, and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins.
