Open your Bible and read James 5:13–20 slowly.

Mark what James says about suffering, prayer, cheerfulness, praise, sickness, elders, faith, confession, healing, Elijah, wandering, turning back, death, and sins.

Big Idea

Faith does not suffer alone, rejoice alone, weaken alone, confess alone, or wander alone.

James brings the life of the church before God in prayer. Suffering leads to prayer. Joy leads to praise. Weakness calls for shepherding. Sin calls for confession. Wandering calls for rescue.

The Main Question

James keeps asking what faith does under real conditions.

“Is anyone among you suffering? Then he must pray.”

Faith does not pretend pressure is small.

Faith brings pressure to God.

Flow of the Passage

James 5:13

The suffering believer must pray, and the cheerful believer must sing praise.

James 5:14–15

The sick or weak believer must call for the elders, who pray over him in the name of the Lord.

James 5:16

Believers must confess sins to one another and pray for one another, because the effective prayer of a righteous man accomplishes much.

James 5:17–18

Elijah is given as an example of earnest prayer before God.

James 5:19–20

The church must pursue the wandering brother and turn him back from the error of his way.

Doctrinal Warnings

James does not turn prayer into a slogan.

Prayer belongs in the actual life of the church: suffering, joy, weakness, sin, confession, need, and restoration.

This passage also does not teach neglect of wise care, medical help, or emergency attention. Calling the elders and praying in faith does not mean refusing lawful help in time of need. James is teaching dependence on God, not reckless neglect.

Do not suffer prayerlessly.

James says the suffering person must pray.
