Review the book of James and read 1 John 1:5–10 slowly.

Mark what Scripture says about walking, truth, obedience, confession, light, darkness, love, and sin.

Big Idea

Living faith does not stay hidden.

James shows faith in action. John shows fellowship in the light. Together they press the same truth: a person cannot claim God while refusing the life God requires.

The Main Question

James asks whether faith can be seen.

John asks whether fellowship with God is being lived in the light.

“If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.”

The issue is not religious vocabulary.

The issue is whether the claim is true.

James

Living faith is tested by trials, temptation, obedience, mercy, speech, wisdom, humility, justice, endurance, prayer, and restoration.

1 John 1:5

God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.

1 John 1:6–7

A claim of fellowship with God is false if the life walks in darkness. Walking in the light shows true fellowship.

1 John 1:8–10

Walking in the light does not mean pretending sin is absent. It means confessing sin truthfully before God.

Doctrinal Warnings

James and John do not allow empty claims.

A person may claim faith, wisdom, love, fellowship, truth, and devotion to God. Scripture asks whether the life agrees with the claim.

Perfection is not the claim. Honest walking in the light is: obedience where God has spoken, confession where sin is exposed, and love where brethren are before us.

Warning 1

Do not use grace to hide from obedience.

James says faith without works is dead.

Why is obedience not the enemy of grace?
