Faith that hears the Word but refuses to obey it is self-deceived.
James demands more than listening. The implanted Word must be received with humility, obeyed with action, and seen in bridled speech, mercy toward the vulnerable, and separation from the world’s stain.
James asks whether the Word is only being heard or actually being obeyed.
“But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.”
Hearing truth is not the same as submitting to it.

A man may hear Scripture, agree with Scripture, admire Scripture, and still refuse Scripture.
That man is deceived.
The test of hearing is doing. The test of religion is not talk alone. James looks for bridled speech, mercy, and purity.
