Open your Bible and read James 4:1–10 slowly.
Mark what James says about quarrels, pleasures, desire, prayer, worldliness, pride, grace, submission, resistance, nearness, cleansing, mourning, and humility.
The fights outside often begin with wars inside.
James traces conflict back to selfish desires that battle within the heart. Those desires produce envy, quarrels, corrupted prayer, friendship with the world, and hostility toward God. Self-improvement will not cure this. The heart must bow before God in repentance.
James begins with a diagnosis:
“What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you?”
He does not first blame personality, pressure, misunderstanding, or circumstances.
He points to desires at war within.
The visible fight is the fruit.
The heart is the root.
James 4:1–3
James diagnoses quarrels as the outward fruit of inward pleasures, envy, and corrupted prayer.
James 4:4–5
He exposes worldliness as spiritual adultery and hostility toward God.
James 4:6
God gives greater grace, opposes the proud, and gives grace to the humble.
James 4:7–9
James calls for decisive repentance: submit to God, resist the devil, draw near to God, cleanse hands, purify hearts, and mourn over sin.
James 4:10
The passage closes with the promise that the Lord will exalt the humble.

James does not treat conflict as only an outside problem.
He goes after the heart.
Quarrels may show up in words, relationships, homes, churches, and prayers, but James says the war begins with desires within. Until those desires are exposed and brought under God, the fighting will keep finding new places to appear.
James says quarrels come from pleasures that wage war in the members.
