2
From Judges to Haggai: one long call back to faithfulness.
Five centuries of unfaithfulness, exile, and return.
3
Judges, kings, and prophets could not break Israel's cycle of sin.
Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
4
" Do not trust in deceptive words, saying, 'This is the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD.'
Jeremiah 7:4 · NASB
5
Babylon came. Jerusalem fell. The temple burned.
Judgment landed exactly as God had said.
6
"For thus says the LORD, 'When seventy years have been completed for Babylon, I will visit you and fulfill My good word to you, to bring you back to this place.
Jeremiah 29:10 · NASB
7
A remnant came home to rubble — and stopped building.
8
So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,
Haggai 1:14 · NASB
9
On the twenty-first of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet saying,
Haggai 2:1 · NASB
10
"Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people saying,
Haggai 2:2 · NASB
11
'Who is left among you who saw this temple in its former glory? And how do you see it now? Does it not seem to you like nothing in comparison?
Haggai 2:3 · NASB
12
When God's work seems small and heavy, be strong, work, and trust His presence.
13
I
Do not let comparison despise God's work.
It looks like nothing beside Solomon's — say it anyway.
14
A congregation may be small. A preacher may be inexperienced.
God knows the facts before we bring them to Him.
15
A fact becomes a weapon when it excuses disobedience.
16
Don't measure your usefulness by another man's opportunities.
You answer for what God placed in your hand.
17
Yesterday's blessings cannot excuse today's neglect.
Some praise the past because it asks nothing of them.
18
"For who has despised the day of small things? But these seven will be glad when they see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel--these are the eyes of the LORD which range to and fro throughout the earth."
Zechariah 4:10 · NASB
19
Don't despise a beginning because it is only a beginning.
The gospel first went out through a few disciples.
20
'But now take courage, Zerubbabel,' declares the LORD, 'take courage also, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all you people of the land take courage,' declares the LORD, 'and work; for I am with you,' declares the LORD of hosts.
Haggai 2:4 · NASB
21
II
Be strong and do the work God gave you.
Courage is commanded, not felt.
22
The command reaches Zerubbabel, Joshua, and all the people.
No leader carries the work alone.
23
A congregation is harmed when leaders compete for place.
24
“Take courage ... and work” — not wait until you feel strong.
Courage is often seen after a man begins the duty he avoided.
25
24 "And the one also who had received the one talent came up and said, 'Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering where you scattered no seed. 25 'And I was afraid, and went away and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours.'
Matthew 25:24-25 · NASB
26
God's work doesn't wait for you to feel ready; it calls you to obey.
27
Learn the Scriptures. Be present. Ask for work. Teach when you can.
Grow into responsibility by carrying what's in front of you today.
28
'As for the promise which I made you when you came out of Egypt, My Spirit is abiding in your midst; do not fear!'
Haggai 2:5 · NASB
29
teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
Matthew 28:20 · NASB
30
III
Work because God is with you and His purpose will stand.
His presence is the strength of His people.
31
"For thus says the LORD of hosts, ' Once more in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea also and the dry land.
Haggai 2:6 · NASB
32
'I will shake all the nations; and they will come with the wealth of all nations, and I will fill this house with glory,' says the LORD of hosts.
Haggai 2:7 · NASB
33
'The silver is Mine and the gold is Mine,' declares the LORD of hosts.
Haggai 2:8 · NASB
34
And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, "YET ONCE MORE I WILL SHAKE NOT ONLY THE EARTH, BUT ALSO THE HEAVEN."
Hebrews 12:26 · NASB
35
This expression, "Yet once more," denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
Hebrews 12:27 · NASB
36
Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe;
Hebrews 12:28 · NASB
37
'The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,' says the LORD of hosts, 'and in this place I will give peace,' declares the LORD of hosts."
Haggai 2:9 · NASB
38
6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth.
1 Corinthians 3:6-7 · NASB
39
You don't need to see the whole result before you obey today.
God sees the end from the beginning.
40
Don't chase a platform — become a servant who can be trusted.
Open your Bible before you open your mouth.
41
There's a person to encourage, a sin to put away, a duty you've delayed.
The Lord doesn't ask if the work looks big enough to impress men.
42
God had not changed. His covenant had not failed. His purpose had not stopped.
43
The Lord's work is never small because the Lord is never small.
Haggai 2:4
44
Hear, believe, repent, confess Christ, and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins.
If you have never obeyed the gospel, come now.
45
Repent, and return to the work God has given you.
Come as we stand and sing.
