2
The unchanging Father never entices His children toward death.
He gives what is good and brings us forth through the word of truth.
3
Pride requires an origin story in which you are the main character.
4
The promotion. The recovery. The harvest. Every hand is real.
Trace the good through that hand to the Father above it.
5
James is speaking to Christians under trial — pain, pressure, temptation.
When desire pulls, we blame circumstances, people, even God.
6
Desire brings forth sin, and sin brings forth death.
God is not the Father of that chain.
7
But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.
James 1:14 · NASB
8
Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.
James 1:15 · NASB
9
Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.
James 1:16 · NASB
10
Desire brings forth death. God brings us forth through the word of truth.
That contrast governs this sermon.
11
I
God's giving corrects a deadly lie.
We cannot blame Him for where our own desire leads.
12
Desire offers pleasure, relief, control, recognition — then conceives sin and brings forth death.
13
Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.
James 1:17 · NASB
14
Sin advertises a gift and delivers death; God speaks truth and gives life.
15
A good gift is not simply whatever feels pleasant at the moment.
God's wisdom may correct, restrain, or lead us through hardship rather than remove it.
16
5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, 8 being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
James 1:5-8 · NASB
17
Health, ability, opportunity, relationships, provision — gifts that should awaken gratitude.
They don't erase the human labor through which God provides them.
18
For who regards you as superior? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?
1 Corinthians 4:7 · NASB
19
The answer doesn't make labor meaningless. It makes boasting senseless.
20
God didn't merely improve our circumstances. He brought us from death toward life.
21
II
God's character never changes.
The Father of lights has no variation or shifting shadow.
22
The sun, moon, and stars declare His power — but they are created, and their position changes.
23
Shadows lengthen and shorten. The moon waxes and wanes.
The created lights vary; their Father does not.
24
This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.
1 John 1:5 · NASB
25
God does not alternate — generous in one season, corrupt in another.
26
You can misunderstand a circumstance without having reason to distrust God's character.
27
2 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
James 1:2-4 · NASB
28
His gifts are not wages we've earned.
Grace teaches and requires us to trust the Giver.
29
The lights change; the Father of the lights does not.
30
When health fails, God hasn't changed. When plans collapse, His word hasn't changed.
31
III
God brings forth life, not death.
The new birth begins in His will, not our merit.
32
In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures.
James 1:18 · NASB
33
Desire conceives sin; sin matures into death. God, by contrast, brings people forth to life.
34
The instrument isn't a feeling or a tradition. It is the gospel.
Heard, believed, received, obeyed.
35
21 Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. 22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.
James 1:21-22 · NASB
36
First fruits were the harvest's first portion, set apart for God.
Christians are a people brought forth and consecrated to the Giver.
37
As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
1 Peter 4:10 · NASB
38
A talent used only to build a reputation serves the self.
Used to strengthen another, teach truth, or advance the gospel, it honors the Giver.
39
13 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit." 14 Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. 15 Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that." 16 But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. 17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.
James 4:13-17 · NASB
40
Pride forgets the source; gratitude remembers the source and obeys His purpose.
41
Name one gift today. Say, "I did not create this. God entrusted it to me."
Serve, give, teach, or encourage without seeking recognition this week.
42
Honor both the visible labor and the ultimate Giver in your home.
Make gratitude a normal sound in the house, not a special-occasion performance.
43
Don't measure God's goodness by whether the burden disappeared.
Ask Him for wisdom. Receive His word. Refuse the desire that turns pain into sin.
44
Name what God has already supplied before naming what is missing.
Use every congregational gift for evangelism, edification, and care of those in need.
45
The heavenly lights change, but their Father has no variation or shifting shadow.
He brought Christians forth as first fruits — a people consecrated to His purpose.
46
The word of truth is still calling people out of sin and death.
Believe, repent, confess, and be baptized — you will not have earned the gift.
47
Receive His gifts with gratitude, trust His character in trial, and serve for His glory.
James 1:17-18
