Studies in the Gospel of John

The Helper, Sorrow, Joy, and Victory

John 16
Ed Rangel · Waupaca Church of Christ · May 22, 2026
1
What This Lesson Should Do
  • See why Jesus warned of persecution before it came
  • Identify the Spirit's work: convicting the world, guiding the apostles
  • Connect His departure, their sorrow, and their coming joy
  • Ground prayer in Jesus' name on His completed work
  • Train the next generation to stand in a hostile world
2
Jesus prepares His disciples for hatred, sorrow, witness, prayer, and victory.
The Spirit's guided truth. Courage grounded in His triumph.
3
A weak faith needs the world to calm down before it can stand.
4
This is not soft comfort. It is armed comfort.
5
I
Jesus warns His disciples so they will not stumble.
Judas is gone. The cross is near. He speaks before the storm breaks.
6
"These things I have spoken to you so that you may be kept from stumbling.
John 16:1 · NASB
7
Surprise can shake faith that expected comfort instead of opposition.
He tells the truth before the pressure arrives. That is pastoral care.
8
2 "They will make you outcasts from the synagogue, but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God. 3 "These things they will do because they have not known the Father or Me.
John 16:2-3 · NASB
9
Persecution can wear religious clothing.
A man may fight the word of God while thinking he defends God.
10
Sincerity does not sanctify rebellion.
11
"But these things I have spoken to you, so that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them. These things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
John 16:4 · NASB
12
A congregation trained only for comfort will not stand under pressure.
Children, new converts, saints — warn them before the hour comes.
13
Talk It Through
  • Why did Jesus warn His disciples before persecution happened?
  • What kind of persecution does John 16:2 describe?
  • Can sincere religious zeal still be wrong? How do we test it?
14
II
His departure is necessary for the Helper's coming.
He is not dragged into defeat. He returns to the One who sent Him.
15
5 "But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, `Where are You going?' 6 "But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
John 16:5-6 · NASB
16
"But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
John 16:7 · NASB
17
To them, His leaving looked like loss. It served the divine plan.
Cross, resurrection, ascension, Spirit — one work, held together.
18
The mission will not rest on human memory, courage, or cleverness.
He sends the Helper — the Spirit of truth.
19
Talk It Through
  • Why does Jesus say His departure is to the disciples' advantage?
20
III
The Spirit convicts the world: sin, righteousness, judgment.
He does not flatter the world. He exposes its false verdict about Christ.
21
"And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;
John 16:8 · NASB
22
9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; 11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
John 16:9-11 · NASB
23
"Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins."
John 8:24 · NASB
24
Unbelief is not intellectual innocence. It is guilt.
Rejecting the Son is not neutrality.
25
Righteousness is not decided by public opinion.
The world condemned Jesus. The Father vindicated Him completely.
26
"Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ this Jesus whom you crucified."
Acts 2:36 · NASB
27
The church speaks from Christ's victory, not begging the world's permission.
The ruler of this world has already received his sentence.
28
Talk It Through
  • What does the Spirit convict the world about in John 16:8-11?
  • How does that convicting work connect to the apostles' witness?
29
IV
The Spirit guides the apostles into all the truth.
And in doing so, He glorifies Christ.
30
12 "I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
John 16:12-13 · NASB
31
14 "He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 "All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.
John 16:14-15 · NASB
32
The promise was made to the apostles, not to every private impulse.
The Spirit glorifies Christ. He never contradicts Him.
33
Not every strong feeling is the Spirit.
34
The church receives Spirit-given truth through the inspired apostolic word.
The faith has been delivered. Remain in it.
35
Talk It Through
  • Why must John 16:13 be understood first as a promise to the apostles?
  • How do we test claims that 'the Spirit led me' today?
36
V
Jesus turns sorrow into joy.
He does not mock their grief. He transforms it.
37
"A little while, and you will no longer see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me."
John 16:16 · NASB
38
"Truly, truly, I say to you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but your grief will be turned into joy.
John 16:20 · NASB
39
21 "Whenever a woman is in labor she has pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a child has been born into the world. 22 "Therefore you too have grief now; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.
John 16:21-22 · NASB
40
Christian joy is not denial of sorrow.
The grief was real. The resurrection did not erase it — it overtook it.
41
The world can threaten and persecute. It cannot undo the risen Christ.
Men who scattered became men who testified.
42
Talk It Through
  • How does Jesus describe the disciples' sorrow and coming joy in 16:16-22?
43
VI
Jesus opens access to the Father in His name.
Prayer grounded on His completed work and the Father's own love.
44
23 "In that day you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you. 24 "Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.
John 16:23-24 · NASB
45
'In My name' is not a phrase tacked onto selfish requests.
Under His authority. Through His mediation. In harmony with His will.
46
26 "In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf; 27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came forth from the Father.
John 16:26-27 · NASB
47
"I came forth from the Father and have come into the world; I am leaving the world again and going to the Father."
John 16:28 · NASB
48
This verse is the backbone of the whole chapter.
From the Father. Into the world. Leaving the world. Back to the Father.
49
31 Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? 32 "Behold, an hour is coming, and has already come, for you to be scattered, each to his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
John 16:31-32 · NASB
50
Strong words before pressure do not always equal strong faith under pressure.
They believed — and they were about to scatter.
51
Talk It Through
  • What does it mean to ask the Father in Jesus' name?
  • Why does Jesus expose their coming failure right after they profess faith?
52
VII
Christ gives peace because He has overcome the world.
Peace in Him — not in the world becoming friendly.
53
"These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world."
John 16:33 · NASB
54
Peace in Christ and tribulation in the world exist at the same time.
Pressed, but not abandoned. Opposed, but not defeated.
55
Courage is not personality. Courage is faith acting under pressure.
56
Christ reigns now.
The kingdom is not waiting on an earthly throne. His people endure because He has overcome.
57
4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world-our faith. 5 Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
1 John 5:4-5 · NASB
58
Talk It Through
  • How can a Christian have peace in Christ while facing tribulation?
  • What must we hand the next generation before the hour of pressure comes?
59
paraklētos — the Helper
One called alongside. The Spirit sent to aid the apostles in witness and truth.
60
elenchō — to convict
To expose, to prove, to bring to light. The Spirit's work toward the world.
61
nikaō — to overcome
To conquer. To prevail. Christ's victory over the world.
62
Stop measuring faithfulness by how easy life feels.
He gives truth before the trial — and peace in Him.
63
Do not trade apostolic truth for cultural peace.
A softer message is not the answer. Standing under the word is.
64
Train the next generation before the hour of pressure comes.
Give them Christ's words — before the world demands their loyalty.
65
Unbelief is not harmless. Obey the gospel.
Hear. Believe. Repent. Confess. Be baptized for the remission of sins.
66
Christian — return to His word. Pray in His name. Stand with His people.
Do not let tribulation become an excuse for compromise.
