2
Keeping your word can cost more than you expected when you gave it.
3
After forty wilderness years, Joshua leads Israel into Canaan.
Moses has died. Israel's kings are still generations away.
4
Israel enters the land God promised to Abraham's descendants.
The Jordan is crossed. Jericho and Ai have fallen. Israel camps at Gilgal.
5
But all the leaders said to the whole congregation, "We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we cannot touch them.
Joshua 9:19 · NASB
6
The LORD gave Israel the victory He promised.
His saving work in Christ calls us to trust, obedience, and gratitude.
7
I
Joshua answered a costly call.
Joshua 10:1-7
8
Now it came about when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured Ai, and had utterly destroyed it (just as he had done to Jericho and its king, so he had done to Ai and its king), and that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were within their land,
Joshua 10:1 · NASB
9
Gibeon's peace with Israel alarmed the king of Jerusalem.
He gathered four other kings against it.
10
Then the men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua to the camp at Gilgal, saying, "Do not abandon your servants; come up to us quickly and save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites that live in the hill country have assembled against us."
Joshua 10:6 · NASB
11
Joshua marched to help the people Israel had promised to spare.
He answered their appeal with action.
12
In whose eyes a reprobate is despised, But who honors those who fear the LORD; He swears to his own hurt and does not change;
Psalm 15:4 · NASB
13
A lawful commitment does not stop mattering when it becomes inconvenient.
Think of the help you promised when your schedule was open.
14
II
Joshua acted on God's promise.
Joshua 10:8-9
15
The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands; not one of them shall stand before you."
Joshua 10:8 · NASB
16
Joshua marched all night from Gilgal and struck suddenly.
The promise still involved a march, a battle, and exertion.
17
God promised Joshua victory in Israel's conquest.
This promise does not guarantee success for every plan we make.
18
Fear can tempt us to postpone what Christ has commanded.
Tell the truth about your wrongdoing, even when you fear the response.
19
Waiting until obedience feels easy can become a way of refusing it.
20
III
The LORD gave the victory.
Joshua 10:10-11
21
And the LORD confounded them before Israel, and He slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and pursued them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
Joshua 10:10 · NASB
22
As they fled from before Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth-horon, the LORD threw large stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died; there were more who died from the hailstones than those whom the sons of Israel killed with the sword.
Joshua 10:11 · NASB
23
"Then in the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete."
Genesis 15:16 · NASB
24
Christians hold no commission to conquer territory for Christ.
His kingdom was not of this world.
25
Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm."
John 18:36 · NASB
26
Hard work gives a servant no reason to take the Master's glory.
Remember whose truth you are teaching and whose salvation you are offering.
27
Our own sins have made us guilty before God.
We need reconciliation with Him.
28
For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die.
Romans 5:6–7 · NASB
29
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.
Romans 5:8–9 · NASB
30
For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
Romans 5:10 · NASB
31
Through the cross, sinners can be reconciled to God.
Our confidence rests in Christ's blood and the life of our risen Lord.
32
When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,
Colossians 2:13 · NASB
33
having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
Colossians 2:14 · NASB
34
When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.
Colossians 2:15 · NASB
35
God provided forgiveness through Christ and triumphed over the hostile powers.
The cross displays the seriousness of our sin and the greatness of His mercy.
36
IV
The LORD heard Joshua.
Joshua 10:12-15
37
Then Joshua spoke to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, "O sun, stand still at Gibeon, And O moon in the valley of Aijalon."
Joshua 10:12 · NASB
38
The sun stood still until the nation had prevailed.
Scripture tells us what God did without explaining how.
39
There was no day like that before it or after it, when the LORD listened to the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel.
Joshua 10:14 · NASB
40
This unique day gives us reason to stand in awe of God.
It gives no technique for forcing wonders by speaking forcefully.
41
The God who heard Joshua deserves our trust when we pray.
42
Christ's resurrection gives us hope beyond surviving another difficult day.
Christ's victory gives us reason to keep serving.
43
but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:57 · NASB
44
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.
1 Corinthians 15:58 · NASB
45
Examine the duty you have been putting off.
Name the obligation honestly, and if you have failed, begin making it right.
46
The power available to God is greater than the strength available to you.
The cross proves His love. The resurrection grounds our hope.
47
Christ's death and resurrection bring salvation and victory over death.
Obey His word, depend on His power, and give Him glory.
48
And Peter said to them, "Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:38 · NASB
49
Hear the gospel, believe, repent, confess Christ, and be baptized.
Receive forgiveness of sins and live faithfully as His disciple.
50
If you have been excusing disobedience, repent and return to faithful service.
If you need the prayers of the church, let us help you.
51
Our victory and our hope are in Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:57
