What This Lesson Should Do
  • Follow the risen Jesus
  • Trace Peter’s restoration
  • See the Shepherd promises
  • Follow without comparison
3
The risen King meets servants who still need restoration.
John 21 shows His provision, correction, and authority.
4
I
Jesus fills an empty net
John 21:1–14
5
After these things Jesus manifested Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and He manifested Himself in this way.
John 21:1 · NASB
6
"Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, And against the man, My Associate," Declares the LORD of hosts. " Strike the Shepherd that the sheep may be scattered; And I will turn My hand against the little ones.
Zechariah 13:7 · NASB
7
Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together.
John 21:2 · NASB
8
Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will also come with you." They went out and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing.
John 21:3 · NASB
9
Experience did not put one fish in the boat.
One command from Jesus will fill the net.
10
Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman keeps awake in vain.
Psalm 127:1 · NASB
11
But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.
John 21:4 · NASB
12
So Jesus said to them, "Children, you do not have any fish, do you?" They answered Him, "No."
John 21:5 · NASB
13
And He said to them, "Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch." So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish.
John 21:6 · NASB
14
The risen Jesus recalls Peter’s first call.
Another empty night. Another command. Another full net.
15
Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord." So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea.
John 21:7 · NASB
16
So when they got out on the land, they saw a charcoal fire already laid and fish placed on it, and bread.
John 21:9 · NASB
17
The risen Lord meets Peter near his worst memory.
18
Breakfast waits before the disciples bring their catch.
His provision comes first.
19
Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not torn.
John 21:11 · NASB
20
The catch was large, counted, and remembered.
John gives no symbolic explanation.
21
Ezekiel saw many fish beside life-giving water.
John does not call this fulfillment.
22
Jesus supplied more than their strength could haul.
Despite the great catch, the net held.
23
Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples ventured to question Him, "Who are You?" knowing that it was the Lord.
John 21:12 · NASB
24
Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and the fish likewise.
John 21:13 · NASB
25
This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead.
John 21:14 · NASB
26
II
Jesus restores a fallen shepherd
John 21:15–17
27
So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Tend My lambs."
John 21:15 · NASB
28
The Lord speaks to the man behind the failure.
Personal. Direct. Unavoidable.
29
Peter no longer compares his loyalty with anyone.
He appeals to the Lord’s knowledge.
30
Jesus gives Peter three opportunities to confess his love.
31
John uses both words with overlapping meaning.
The threefold question carries the passage’s force.
32
The issue is whether Peter loves Jesus.
Love must serve Christ’s flock.
33
Love for the Shepherd takes responsibility for the sheep.
34
A shepherd who loves Jesus must not use His sheep.
The flock needs care, not exploitation.
35
"Then I will set over them one shepherd, My servant David, and he will feed them; he will feed them himself and be their shepherd.
Ezekiel 34:23 · NASB
36
"I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.
John 10:11 · NASB
37
The church belongs to Christ.
Every shepherd serves under His authority.
38
Peter taught elders to shepherd by example.
The restored servant points to the Chief Shepherd.
39
He said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Shepherd My sheep."
John 21:16 · NASB
40
Christ’s flock needs truth, protection, guidance, and care.
Scripture supplies the food.
41
He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?" And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You." Jesus said to him, "Tend My sheep.
John 21:17 · NASB
42
The Lord knows our thoughts and words.
Peter rests his appeal on complete knowledge.
43
Grace restores the repentant servant to useful work.
44
III
Jesus calls Peter to follow
John 21:18–23
45
"Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself and walk wherever you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will gird you, and bring you where you do not wish to go."
John 21:18 · NASB
46
John says Peter’s death would glorify God.
He does not narrate every later detail.
47
Now this He said, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, "Follow Me!"
John 21:19 · NASB
48
Restoration returns Peter to the road of obedience.
49
Peter said to Him, "Lord, why can I not follow You right now? I will lay down my life for You."
John 13:37 · NASB
50
The disciple who was sifted will strengthen others.
Restoration becomes responsibility.
51
The Lord restores Peter to faithfulness, not comfort.
52
Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, "Lord, who is the one who betrays You?"
John 21:20 · NASB
53
Peter looks toward another faithful disciple.
He wants to know that disciple’s future.
54
So Peter seeing him said to Jesus, "Lord, and what about this man?"
John 21:21 · NASB
55
Jesus said to him, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!"
John 21:22 · NASB
56
Another disciple’s assignment does not change your command.
Follow Jesus.
57
Christ decides each servant’s road.
Every disciple answers the call to follow.
58
Therefore this saying went out among the brethren that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?"
John 21:23 · NASB
59
The cure for distortion is the Lord’s word in context.
60
A small change can create a doctrine Jesus never taught.
Return to His actual words.
61
IV
The witness tells the truth
John 21:24–25
62
This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true.
John 21:24 · NASB
63
Truthful testimony carries the events to later readers.
64
And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written.
John 21:25 · NASB
65
John has told us enough to believe.
His testimony about Jesus is true.
66
The grace that restores us puts us under Jesus.
He provides, corrects, and commands.
67
Receive the saving King with obedient faith.
Believe, repent, confess Him, and be baptized for forgiveness.
68
Return honestly to the Lord who knows all things.
Serve His flock. Follow without comparison.
69
The risen King restores failed servants to faithful service.
