2
A man can keep every rule and still refuse to love who the father loves.
Grace goes out to find the older son too.
3
He worked the field. He kept his word.
Now he stands outside, arms folded.
4
This is the harder story.
The son who never left still ended up outside.
5
Jesus already told you about one son.
6
"Now his older son was in the field, and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing.
Luke 15:25 · NASB
7
I
The Older Son's Discovery and Anger
He learns of joy secondhand, from a servant.
8
26 "And he summoned one of the servants and began inquiring what these things could be. 27 "And he said to him, `Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has received him back safe and sound.'
Luke 15:26-27 · NASB
9
His first instinct is suspicion, not joy.
The servant's report is plain and undoctored.
10
Nothing in that report explains what came next.
11
"But he became angry and was not willing to go in; and his father came out and began pleading with him.
Luke 15:28 · NASB
12
A man can labor in his father's field and still not share his father's heart.
13
The father who ran for one son now walks out for the other.
Grace goes looking at the front door too.
14
II
The Older Son's Complaint Against His Father
Years of sonship filed under labor.
15
"But he answered and said to his father, `Look! For so many years I have been serving you and I have never neglected a command of yours; and yet you have never given me a young goat, so that I might celebrate with my friends;
Luke 15:29 · NASB
16
He reaches for "serving" first, not "son."
His record is real, but incomplete.
17
He pictured his celebration with friends, not his father.
Every command kept, and still unpaid in his own eyes.
18
but when this son of yours came, who has devoured your wealth with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him.'
Luke 15:30 · NASB
19
He will not say "my brother." He cuts the relation.
The ugliest terms justify his own anger.
20
He is not angry his brother sinned. He is angry his brother was forgiven.
21
He kept the rules without learning the affection.
Fairness has replaced love as his standard.
22
It was never really about a goat.
It is a father's grace he has never trusted for himself.
23
III
The Father's Appeal and the Unfinished Ending
The father corrects the accounting.
24
"And he said to him, `Son, you have always been with me, and all that is mine is yours.
Luke 15:31 · NASB
25
What he thought he had to earn, he already owned.
Sonship was never a wage.
26
`But we had to celebrate and rejoice, for this brother of yours was dead and has begun to live, and was lost and has been found.' "
Luke 15:32 · NASB
27
"Had to" is the father's own verb.
Joy over a returned son was never optional.
28
1 Now all the tax collectors and the sinners were coming near Him to listen to Him. 2 Both the Pharisees and the scribes began to grumble, saying, "This man receives sinners and eats with them."
Luke 15:1-2 · NASB
29
The parable does not end at the field. The hearer was meant to finish it.
30
1 "For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2 "When he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius for the day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 "And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the market place; 4 and to those he said, 'You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.' And so they went. 5 "Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did the same thing. 6 "And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing around; and he *said to them, 'Why have you been standing here idle all day long?' 7 "They *said to him, 'Because no one hired us.' He *said to them, 'You go into the vineyard too.' 8 "When evening came, the owner of the vineyard *said to his foreman, 'Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last group to the first.' 9 "When those hired about the eleventh hour came, each one received a denarius. 10 "When those hired first came, they thought that they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius. 11 "When they received it, they grumbled at the landowner, 12 saying, 'These last men have worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the scorching heat of the day.' 13 "But he answered and said to one of them, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14 'Take what is yours and go, but I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. 15 'Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with what is my own? Or is your eye envious because I am generous?'
Matthew 20:1-15 · NASB
31
4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, 5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. 6 Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" 7 Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.
Galatians 4:4-7 · NASB
32
If a sinner's repentance makes you calculate before you rejoice,
the Father is already walking out to plead with you.
33
This congregation will forgive the prodigal, or it will not.
Go get them, the way the father went and got his son.
34
1 Now accept the one who is weak in faith, but not for the purpose of passing judgment on his opinions. 2 One person has faith that he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats vegetables only. 3 The one who eats is not to regard with contempt the one who does not eat, and the one who does not eat is not to judge the one who eats, for God has accepted him.
Romans 14:1-3 · NASB
35
You were never a hired servant. Stop living like one.
Walk into the house.
36
Two sons left their father that day.
37
Only one is shown coming home in this parable.
He had the farthest to travel.
38
The same door stands open this morning.
The same Father is outside pleading.
39
The Father is already running to find you.
Believe, repent, confess, be baptized for the forgiveness of sins.
40
If resentment has kept you outside a brother's restoration, come.
Come while we stand and sing.
41
The door is open. The music is playing.
Luke 15:32
