Memory Verse: John 19:30 — “It is finished!”
Jesus is the true King: condemned by men, enthroned on the cross, obedient to the Father, and truly buried after completing the work of redemption.
Pilate repeatedly recognizes Jesus' innocence, yet chooses political safety over justice. God's sovereignty does not excuse Pilate, the leaders, or the soldiers.
Questions: What did Pilate know, and what did he fear? How can a person acknowledge truth while refusing to obey it?
Mockery, the inscription, and the soldiers' actions all proclaim what the rulers reject: Jesus is King. His care for His mother shows that devotion to God never excuses neglect of rightful duty.
Questions: Why is the inscription significant? What does Jesus' care for His mother require of His disciples?
Jesus knows what is being accomplished. His thirst confirms real humanity; His final declaration announces a completed sacrifice, not personal defeat.
Questions: What was finished at the cross? Why does Christ's finished work create confidence without authorizing disobedience?
The soldiers confirm Jesus' death, Scripture is fulfilled, and Joseph with Nicodemus bury His body. The resurrection rests on the reality of the crucified King's death and burial.
Questions: What evidence does John give for Jesus' death? What do Joseph and Nicodemus teach about acting openly for Christ?
