The Two Witnesses and One Foundation
Thesis: James teaches that Christians must endure suffering by following the pattern of the prophets, learning from the endurance of Job, and resting in the compassionate purpose of the Lord who brings His servants to His appointed end.
— James 5:10–11
Learning Objectives
Take the Prophets as Your Pattern of Suffering with Faithfulness
James says, “take the prophets.” Not merely admire them. Put them in front of your mind when suffering comes. The word for “example” means a pattern to be copied.
1. They suffered because they spoke in the name of the Lord
The prophets were not suffering because they were foolish or abrasive. They suffered because they carried God’s word into places that did not want it. Jeremiah, Micaiah, Zechariah — all paid a price for faithful proclamation.
Take Job as Your Pattern of Endurance Without Explanation
Job suffered without explanation. He did not know about the heavenly scene. James does not say Job understood — he says Job endured.
1. Job endured under a load he could not interpret
Job sat in ashes, cursed the day of his birth, poured out complaint — yet he did not curse God. Endurance is not emotional smoothness. It is stubborn refusal to let go of God while the pain is real.
Rest in the Compassionate Purpose of the Lord
“You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful.”
The Lord is the foundation. If He is not compassionate, endurance collapses into misery. The Greek word telos means end, goal, result, completion — God has an appointed end in view.

Conclusion & Invitation – Do Not Quit
James says, “We count those blessed who endured.” Not those who escaped quickly. Not those who understood everything. Those who endured — because the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful.
Invitation
If you are outside of Christ, do not try to claim the comfort of the Lord while refusing His authority. Believe the truth. Repent of sin. Confess Christ. Be baptized into Him for the forgiveness of your sins. Rise to walk in newness of life.
