1. The Church Was Brought Forth by the Word — James 1:18

James begins with God’s will, not human planning. The church was not produced by culture, preference, strategy, or religious tradition. God brought forth His people through the word of truth.

• Question: According to James 1:18, who acted first in bringing forth God’s people?
• Follow-up: Why is it dangerous to treat the church as though it can define itself?

2. The Word Must Be Received and Obeyed — James 1:21–22

The word that gives life must also govern life. James does not allow a man to admire the word while refusing to obey it. Hearing without doing is self-deception.

• Question: What does James 1:21 say the implanted word is able to do?
• Follow-up: What does James 1:22 expose about a hearer who does not obey?

3. The Church Must Uphold the Truth — 1 Timothy 3:15

Paul calls the church “the household of God, the pillar and support of the truth.” A pillar does not create what it holds. It lifts it, displays it, and stands under its weight.

• Question: What responsibility does “pillar and support of the truth” place on the church?
• Follow-up: How can a congregation weaken its witness while still claiming to believe the Bible?

4. Truth Must Be Lived, Not Merely Defended — James 2:17; Titus 2:10

A congregation may defend truth with its words while denying it by its conduct. Sound doctrine must produce sound living. The body grows when every part supplies what God designed it to give.

Word Study

Brought forth — God produced spiritual life through His will and His word. The church is not self-made.

Support — Firmness and stability. The church must guard truth, not soften it.

Application

• A Christian strengthens the pillar by receiving the word with humility and obeying it.
• A congregation weakens the pillar when doctrine becomes secondary, worship becomes preference-driven, or sin is tolerated.
• Children must see Christians who believe, speak, defend, and obey the truth.
• The church must preach the word, uphold the truth, serve without selfish ambition, and live as a people governed by Scripture.
