Thesis

Jesus prays for the Father to glorify Him, keep and sanctify the apostles in the truth, and unite all future Christians through the apostolic word so the world may see the glory of the Son.

Study Guide

1. The Son Prays for Glory — John 17:1–5

Jesus does not face the cross as defeat. The hour has come, and He asks the Father to glorify the Son so the Son may glorify the Father. Eternal life is knowing the only true God through Jesus Christ whom He sent.

Question: What does John 17:3 teach about eternal life, and why does it leave no room for bypassing Christ?

Question: How does John 17:5 show that Jesus is more than a prophet or moral teacher?

2. The Son Prays for the Apostles — John 17:6–19

Jesus prays for the men given to Him by the Father. They received His words, would remain in a hostile world, and needed divine keeping. Jesus does not ask for their removal from the world but for protection from the evil one.

Question: Why is it important that the apostles received the words Jesus gave them from the Father?

Question: What is the difference between being in the world and being of the world?

3. The Word Sanctifies — John 17:17–19

Jesus says, “Your word is truth.” Sanctification is not built on feeling, tradition, entertainment, or cultural approval. God sets His people apart through truth, and truth is found in His word.

Question: What errors are corrected by Jesus’ words, “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth”?

Question: How does the church lose holiness when it loosens its grip on Scripture?

4. The Son Prays for All Future Christians — John 17:20–26

Jesus prays for those who would believe through the apostles’ word. Biblical unity is not agreement at the expense of truth. It is shared life under the Father and Son, through the apostolic word, for the sake of faithful witness and final glory with Christ.

Question: Why must John 17:20 control how we understand Christian unity?

Question: What kind of unity did Jesus pray for, and what kind did He not pray for?

Compact Word Study

Glorify — to honor or display glory. Jesus prays for the Father to glorify the Son through His completed work.

Sanctify — to set apart for God’s use. Jesus ties sanctification directly to the truth.

Truth — God’s revealed word, not religious impulse or human tradition.

One — unity among Christ’s people, rooted in the Father and Son and governed by the apostolic word.

Application

• Personal: Let the word of God expose where the world has shaped your thinking, priorities, worship, or obedience.
• Congregational: Pursue unity by returning to apostolic truth, not by ignoring doctrine or softening Scripture.
• For the next generation: Teach children that holiness, mission, and unity are not built on popularity. They are built on the word Christ gave.
