Introduction
Open your Bibles to 2 Peter chapter 1. The apostle Peter writes, “Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you” (2 Peter 1:10–11).
Many Christians like to talk about assurance, but they skip the words that come before it: “be all the more diligent.” Assurance is not carelessness. It is not presumption. Peter places responsibility on the individual to make certain of God’s calling and choosing by practicing what God has commanded.
Notice the word “stumble.” If stumbling were impossible, the word would make no sense here. Peter is teaching that assurance is connected to diligence, faithfulness, and continued practice of God’s will.
There are many people who live with nagging doubts about their salvation. Others go to dangerous extremes—either thinking they must die with a prayer on their lips, or thinking they can live in sin without consequence. The Bible gives a better answer: real assurance grounded in God’s truth.
I. False Foundations for Assurance
A. Assurance does not come from feelings
- “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death” (Proverbs 14:12).
- Feelings are unreliable guides for the soul.
- “The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9).
- Emotions change. Truth does not.
Warning: Do not trust your soul to your gut. Trust it to God’s word.
B. Assurance does not come from perfect knowledge
- We are commanded to grow: “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18).
- Some things in Scripture are “hard to understand” and can be distorted (2 Peter 3:16).
- No one has perfect knowledge, and assurance is not based on knowing everything.
Application: Keep studying. Keep growing. Do not confuse growth with perfection.
C. Assurance does not come from perfect obedience
- “There is none righteous, not even one” (Romans 3:10).
- “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
- “If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar” (1 John 1:10).
Rebuke: If assurance depended on sinless living, no one could be saved.
D. Assurance does not come from good works
- “For by grace you have been saved through faith… not as a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9).
- Good works are necessary, but they are not the foundation of salvation.
II. The True Source of Assurance: Being in Christ
A. Every spiritual blessing is in Christ
- Ephesians chapter 1 teaches that salvation, redemption, peace, and hope are in Christ.
- “For this reason I endure all things… so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 2:10).
B. We enter Christ through baptism
- “For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ” (Galatians 3:27).
- Salvation is in Christ, and we are in Christ when we obey the gospel.
Application: If you are not in Christ, you cannot have biblical assurance.
C. In Christ there is no condemnation
- “Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1).
- Assurance is not found in self; it is found in Christ.
III. Assurance Is Maintained by Walking in the Light
A. Walking in the light means faithful living
- “If we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).
- Walking is not a single step. It is a way of life.
B. Walking in the light does not mean sinless perfection
- “If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves” (1 John 1:8).
- God’s promise: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins” (1 John 1:9).
Encouragement: The Christian life is not sinless, but it is forgiven and cleansed.
C. Diligence brings confidence
- “Be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you” (2 Peter 1:10).
- Faithful practice brings stability and confidence before God.
IV. Two Kinds of Assurance
A. Assurance for the faithful
- If you are in Christ, walking in the light, and repenting when you stumble, then “the entrance into the eternal kingdom… will be abundantly supplied to you” (2 Peter 1:11).
- This is real, biblical assurance.
B. Assurance for the disobedient
- “God will deal out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel” (2 Thessalonians 1:8–9).
- There is assurance—but it is assurance of judgment, not salvation.
Warning: Being unconcerned about obedience is not assurance. It is danger.
Conclusion and Call to Action
Assurance does not rest on feelings, perfect knowledge, perfect obedience, or good works. It rests on being in Christ and walking in the light. If you are in Jesus, striving to please Him, and repenting when you stumble, you can know that you are saved.
If you are not in Christ, or if you are not committed to obeying Him, you need to act today. Confess your faith in Jesus, repent of sin, and be baptized for the forgiveness of your sins. Then walk in the light, and live with the confidence God promises.
