Title: Come Forth and Unbind Him Text: John 11:43-44

  1. The Call to Life (v. 43)
    • Jesus cries out with authority (ekraxen). His word alone brings life from death.
  2. The Response of the Dead (v. 44a)
    • Lazarus obeys the call. He comes out, though still restricted by the graveclothes.
  3. The Command to the Church (v. 44b)
    • "Unbind him, and let him go." Jesus gives the life; the brethren are tasked with removing the remnants of the grave.

  1. Christ Alone Gives the Life
    • We are raised to walk in newness of life exclusively through the blood of Christ at baptism.
  2. The Graveclothes of the Old Man
    • New Christians still wear the habits, struggles, and baggage of their past life in sin.
  3. The Brethren's Duty to Disciple
    • The autonomous, local congregation must step in to patiently teach, mentor, and help unbind the newly saved.
