Introduction
Jesus warned that a man can say “Lord, Lord” and still be rejected because he would not do the Father’s will (Matthew 7:21–23). That warning exposes a deadly reality: profession is not possession. Many hold a paper they call “faith,” but it is forged—because it produces no obedience.
James writes to confront that deception. He is not arguing that a man earns salvation by meritorious works. Paul battles legalism. James battles easy believism—a faith that talks, agrees, and sits—yet never submits. James brings two witnesses: Abraham (the honored patriarch) and Rahab (the despised outsider). High and low, Jew and Gentile—both prove the same truth: saving faith is obedient faith.
Thesis: Genuine, justifying faith is never alone; it is a living conviction that is demonstrated and brought to maturity by obedient works.
I. A Faith That Only Talks Cannot Save (James 2:14–17)
A. The question that destroys “easy believism” (v. 14)
“What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him?” (James 2:14)
James targets a faith that only says. It is verbal, not vital. The question expects “No.” A faith with no obedience is not the saving kind.
Warning: A man can be orthodox in speech and lost in heart (Ezekiel 33:31–32).
Warning: Religious activity without submission ends in “I never knew you” (Matthew 7:21–23).
B. The illustration of empty compassion (vv. 15–16)
“Go in peace… be warmed and be filled,” yet give nothing. (James 2:15–16)
Words without action are useless in mercy—just like words without action are useless in faith.
- True worship is practical righteousness (Isaiah 58:6–7).
- Love that stays verbal is false love (1 John 3:17–18).
C. The verdict (v. 17)
“Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.” (James 2:17)
Truth: Faith without obedience is a corpse—form without life.
Application: If your faith never changes choices, habits, priorities, speech, giving, service, and holiness—then you are not holding saving faith. You are holding a religious document with no life.
II. Faith Must Be Shown—And It Can Only Be Shown by Works (James 2:18–20)
A. The challenge that exposes the lie (v. 18)
“Show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” (James 2:18)
Faith is invisible. Works are visible. You cannot display faith to men without obedience.
- Character is proven by deeds (Proverbs 20:11).
- Jesus demanded visible works that glorify the Father (Matthew 5:16).
B. Demonic belief: correct doctrine, no submission (vv. 19–20)
“You believe that God is one… the demons also believe, and shudder.” (James 2:19)
Demons have:
- doctrinal accuracy (Deuteronomy 6:4),
- recognition of Christ (Mark 1:23–24),
- emotional reaction (“shudder”), yet remain rebels.
Truth: Knowledge + emotion without obedience is demonic-level “faith.”
Rebuke: Do not comfort yourself with “I know the truth” if you refuse to obey the truth. Hell is filled with people who agreed and never submitted.
III. Justifying Faith Is Proven and Perfected by Obedience (James 2:21–26)
A. Abraham: faith proven by costly obedience (vv. 21–23)
“Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac…?” (James 2:21)
Genesis 15:6 declared Abraham righteous. Genesis 22 demonstrated that righteousness. Obedience did not replace faith—it revealed it.
- “Now I know that you fear God” (Genesis 22:12).
- “By faith Abraham… offered up Isaac” (Hebrews 11:17).
“Faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected.” (James 2:22)
Application: Do not lean on a past profession. Present obedience is the evidence of living faith.
B. The sentence that destroys “faith alone” (v. 24)
“You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.” (James 2:24)
This does not teach merit-salvation. It teaches that the only faith that justifies is the faith that obeys.
- God has always required obedient response (Exodus 19:5).
- Even Paul agrees that hearers without doing do not stand justified (Romans 2:13).
- Saving faith is obedient faith (Romans 1:5; Galatians 5:6).
C. Rahab: faith proven by allegiance and risk (v. 25)
“In the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works…?” (James 2:25)
Rahab confessed the true God (Joshua 2:11) and proved it by action. Had she only spoken, she would have perished.
- “By faith Rahab… did not perish” (Hebrews 11:31).
- Faith separates from disobedience and joins God’s people (Joshua 2; Hebrews 11:31).
Application: Your past does not disqualify you. But your present refusal to obey will condemn you. Rahab shows that saving faith chooses God’s side publicly.
D. The final analogy (v. 26)
“For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.” (James 2:26)
Just as breath makes a body living, obedience makes faith living.
- Man became living by God’s breath (Genesis 2:7).
- A church can have a reputation for life and still be dead (Revelation 3:1–2).
Conclusion / Call to Action
James leaves no escape: faith that does not obey is dead and cannot save. Abraham and Rahab—opposites in background—agree in testimony: justification is proven in obedient action.
Do not settle for church attendance, correct phrases, emotional moments, or doctrinal debates. The question is simpler and heavier: Are you obeying Christ? (John 14:15; Hebrews 5:9)
Invitation
Jesus will not accept “Lord, Lord” without obedience (Matthew 7:21). The gospel demands response—not mere agreement.
- Hear (Romans 10:17)
- Believe (John 8:24)
- Repent (Acts 17:30)
- Confess Christ (Romans 10:9–10)
- Be baptized for forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38; Acts 22:16; Romans 6:3–4; 1 Peter 3:21)
If you have obeyed the gospel but your faith has grown cold and fruitless, repent and return to active obedience (Revelation 2:4–5). Do not wait for judgment day to discover your faith was dead. Obey today and live.
