Evidence of Good Influence (Reputation + Fairness + Open-Hearted Care)
> Thesis: God requires elders to have proven influence—inside the church and outside it—because shepherds must lead with moral authority, fair judgment, and open-hearted care that the community can recognize as genuine.
Warning: What Happens When Churches Ignore “Influence” Qualifications
A church can survive a lot of weaknesses.
But it cannot survive unsafe leadership.
One of the fastest ways to harm a church is to appoint men who are:
- respected in the building but distrusted in real life
- impressive in speech but thin in character
- visible in attendance but untested in burden-bearing
When influence is missing, the church pays in:
- suspicion instead of confidence
- weak discipline because leadership has no credibility
- drift because oversight lacks moral authority
- public shame because outsiders see hypocrisy
God wrote qualifications to make the church safe.
This lesson is protection.

Because shepherding is real life:
- disputes that must be handled fairly
- discipline that must be respected
- hurting people who need care

1) Evidence of Good Influence — “Blameless” Means Not Guilty
Blameless (1 Timothy 3:2)
> “An overseer, then, must be above reproach…”

This does not mean “no one can accuse him.”
Even Jesus was accused.
It means: he is not guilty of charges that stick.
He is not under deserved rebuke for ongoing wrong.
Blameless is not sinless.
It is present credibility and proven integrity.
The real question:
Can this man carry authority without hypocrisy?
2) A Good Testimony Among Unbelievers
Public Integrity Matters (1 Timothy 3:7)
> “And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.”

God requires shepherds to be respected outside the church.
Not because outsiders set the standard—
but because hypocrisy kills influence.
Paul ties failure here to:
- reproach
- the devil’s snare
Satan loves leaders with double standards.

“Just” means fair.
Not tilted by favoritism, money, family, or popularity.
What “Just” Requires
- one standard for all
- courage to say “no” to the influential
- humility to hear both sides
- decisions based on Scripture, not pressure

Hospitality is not personality.
It’s shepherding.
It means a man is:
- accessible
- open-hearted
- willing to be interrupted for souls

5) Applying the Standards Wisely (Without Being Shallow)
Some qualifications are:
- relative
- hard to quantify
So churches must avoid:
- checklist judgment
- excuse-making

Don’t ask: “How often does he host?”
Ask: Is he open-hearted and ready to serve?

Ask: What owns him?

Greed shows up as selfishness and stinginess,
not a price tag.
6) The Church Must Know the Men
You Can’t Recognize What You Don’t Observe
A church cannot choose wisely
if members do not really know each other.
If a church stays distant, people vote on:
- personality
- reputation
- partial stories
But the real question is:
Can I trust my soul under this man’s oversight?
That requires observation over time:
- how he handles conflict
- how he treats his family under pressure
- whether he listens or controls
- whether he will confront sin with courage
7) One-Sided Thinking Is Dangerous
A Few Traits Cannot Replace the Whole Picture
Churches appoint men based on:
- attendance
- friendliness
- success
- image
But leadership magnifies weaknesses.
A man doesn’t become qualified by appointment.
Appointment reveals what already exists.
8) What Does an Elder Do Anyway?
The Church Must Understand the Work
Elders are not corporate executives.
They are shepherds.
Their work includes:
- guarding doctrine
- watching souls
- confronting sin
- protecting from wolves
- caring for the weak
- restoring the fallen

Some churches confuse “what we grew up with” with Scripture.
The question must always be:
- is it written?
- or is it tradition?
