Learning Objectives
- State the two roles Paul assigns to the church in 1 Timothy 3:15: pillar and support.
- Explain why the church, brought forth by the word of truth, must remain governed by that truth.
- Distinguish between the church’s role in upholding truth and the truth itself as God’s revealed standard.
- Commit to defending and obeying one specific truth this week.
Thesis
The church stands strong only when it faithfully upholds, displays, and obeys the truth that gave it life.
Hook: “A farmer can ignore a weak beam in the barn for a while, especially when the weather is calm and the load is light. But when the weight comes and the pressure hits, the weakness shows. The church may ignore truth for a while too. It may still look active, organized, and busy. But when truth is no longer upheld, collapse has already begun.”
Introduction
- The church is not a human institution free to redefine itself.
- Paul calls it “the household of God,” “the church of the living God,” and “the pillar and support of the truth” (1 Tim. 3:15).
- If the church fails to defend and live the truth, it fails in its God-given purpose.
- Because the church was created by the truth, it must never compromise the truth.
I. The Church Was Brought Forth by the Truth.

- 1 Corinthians 14:40 requires all things to be done properly and in order.
- Matthew 21:12-13 shows the Lord condemning corruption in His house.
- Its identity must be governed by His Word.
- James 1:18 says we were brought forth by the word of truth.
- John 17:17 says God’s word is truth.
- Deuteronomy 4:2 forbids adding to or taking from what God has spoken.
B. The church was brought forth by the word of truth.
- James 1:18 says God “brought us forth by the word of truth.”
- The church did not create the truth.
- The truth created the church.
- The church cannot compromise the Word without betraying its own origin.
- To tamper with the Word is to tamper with the church’s identity.
- A people born by truth must remain under truth.
## II. The Church Must Uphold the Truth.
A. The church is the pillar of the truth.

- The church must display the truth plainly before the world.
- Matthew 5:14-16 says a city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
- Proverbs 23:23 says, “Buy truth, and do not sell it.”
- Ephesians 4:15 requires speaking the truth in love.
- The church must not hide, soften, or apologize for the truth.
- Jeremiah 1:17 warned the prophet not to be dismayed before the people.
- Galatians 1:10 shows that the servant of Christ cannot shape his message to please men.
- 2 Timothy 4:2 requires preaching the word whether the season is favorable or not.

- Jude 3 commands saints to contend earnestly for the faith once for all handed down.
- Psalm 119:89 says God’s word is firmly fixed in heaven.

- The church is not the source of truth.

III. The Church Upholds the Truth by Living It.
A. The church must be doers of the Word.
- James 1:22 says we must be doers of the word, and not hearers only.
- Truth cannot be upheld by speech alone.
- A church that confesses truth but does not obey it weakens its witness.
- Obedience is one of the church’s strongest defenses of truth.
- Matthew 7:24-27 shows that the wise man is the one who hears and does.
- Titus 2:10 says believers adorn the doctrine of God by their conduct.
- 1 Peter 2:12 shows that honorable conduct answers false accusations.
B. The church must retain sound doctrine.
- Paul told Timothy to retain the standard of sound words.
- 2 Timothy 1:13 says to retain the pattern of sound words.
- 1 Timothy 4:16 ties close attention to doctrine with perseverance.
- Proverbs 4:13 says to hold fast instruction and not let it go.
- Sound doctrine must shape sound living.
- Titus 2:1 links sound doctrine with the kind of life that fits it.
- Romans 6:17 shows obedience from the heart to the standard of teaching delivered.
- Psalm 111:10 shows that right living flows from fearing the Lord.
- Corrupt teaching always produces corrupt fruit.
- Matthew 7:17-20 teaches that corrupt trees produce corrupt fruit.
- 2 Peter 2:1-2 shows that false teachers bring destructive heresies and lead many astray.
- What a church tolerates in doctrine, it will eventually justify in practice.
Application
-
For each Christian: Where are you yielding ground? Where have you started speaking with less clarity because you do not want friction? Where have you gone silent because truth costs too much in that conversation, that relationship, or that setting? If you are softening what God has said, you are not preserving peace. You are surrendering truth.
-
For the church: We cannot claim to be the pillar and support of the truth while borrowing our tone, our standards, or our convictions from the world around us. If the church begins to mirror the culture in doctrine, morals, or priorities, it may still look active and organized, but it is no longer standing where God placed it. A church that treats truth as negotiable is already weakening its own foundation.
-
For the next generation: Our children will not keep truth merely because they watched us attend services. They must see that we believe it, speak it, defend it, and obey it. If we hand them habit without conviction, routine without doctrine, and religion without submission, we should not be surprised when the next generation loses what we refused to hold firmly.
-
Choose one truth this week that you know is being resisted—by the culture, by your peers, or by your own flesh—and stand with it openly. Do not trim it down to make it easier to say. Do not hide it behind silence. Stand with it in your speech, your choices, and your conduct.
Conclusion
- The church is the household of God.
- The church was brought forth by the word of truth.
- The church is called to be the pillar and support of the truth.
- Therefore, the church must receive the truth, uphold the truth, and obey the truth.
Invitation
- If you have not obeyed the gospel, you are outside the household of God.
- Hear the word, believe in Christ, repent of your sins, confess His name, and be baptized for the remission of sins.
- If you are a Christian who has compromised the truth in doctrine or life, repent and return to faithful obedience today.
