Introduction
On the evening of April 14, 1912, the Titanic—hailed as the greatest luxury liner of its day—struck an iceberg and sank. About fifteen hundred souls were lost. Many boarded believing it was the safest ship ever built. They did not know they were stepping onto a disaster.
History gives us sobering stories. Francis Browne was told by his superior, “Get off that ship,” and he obeyed—just in time. John “Jack” Thayer survived and wrote of being pulled under and barely escaping. Benjamin Guggenheim dressed in his finest and waited for the inevitable. Some escaped. Most did not.
The lesson is simple and urgent: when destruction is certain, wisdom says get out while you can. Scripture tells us judgment is coming. The world will not last. Every soul will stand before God. The question is not whether the end will come—the question is whether we will be ready.
I. Judgment Is Certain and Personal
A. Every person will appear before Christ
- “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:10).
- This is not a group appearance. It is personal. You. Me. Each one.
- We will be recompensed “according to what he has done, whether good or bad.”
Application: Write your name next to this verse. Judgment is not theoretical. It is personal.
B. The end of this world is not optional
- The Titanic went down whether people believed it or not.
- Scripture teaches this world will be destroyed, and we will live somewhere forever.
- There will be no appeal after that day. The door will be shut.
Warning: When the end comes, there is no second chance. The time to act is now.
II. Since the End Is Coming, We Must Get Out of Sin
A. Lay aside what entangles
- “Let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us” (Hebrews 12:1).
- Sin weighs us down and keeps us from finishing the race.
- Fix your eyes on Jesus, who endured the cross and now reigns (Hebrews 12:2).
Encouragement: Freedom begins when we drop what is killing us.
B. The faithful will be confessed by Christ
- “He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments… and I will confess his name before My Father” (Revelation 3:5).
- Salvation belongs to those who overcome, not to those who make excuses.
C. Bad company is a spiritual hazard
- “Bad company corrupts good morals” (1 Corinthians 15:33).
- Wrong companions reshape convictions, dull conscience, and weaken faith.
- The claim, “They won’t affect me,” has ruined many souls.
Rebuke: If your friends are pulling you away from Christ, they are not your friends.
D. Get out of living for self
- “We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works” (Ephesians 2:10).
- We do not belong to ourselves. We belong to God.
- Self-centered living must be replaced with God-centered living.
III. Get Out of a Religion That Stops at the Building
A. We are salt and light in the world
- Jesus said we are “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:13–16).
- Salt creates thirst. Light exposes darkness.
- Christianity is not confined to a building. It is lived in the world.
Application: If your faith only shows on Sundays, something is wrong.
B. False religion will not stand
- “Every plant which My heavenly Father did not plant shall be uprooted” (Matthew 15:13).
- God did not authorize human names, human creeds, or human systems.
- We must call Bible things by Bible names and follow Bible teaching.
Warning: Sincerity does not make error safe. Only truth saves.
IV. The Urgency of Today
A. Life is uncertain
- “You do not know what your life will be like tomorrow… you are just a vapor” (James 4:14).
- The Titanic’s passengers thought they had tomorrow. They did not.
B. God’s will must come first
- “Instead, you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that’” (James 4:15).
- To presume on tomorrow is arrogance (James 4:16).
C. Delayed obedience is disobedience
- “Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin” (James 4:17).
- Knowing and not doing is not neutrality—it is guilt.
Call to Action: If you know what is right, do it now.
Conclusion
The Titanic teaches a hard lesson: when destruction is certain, wisdom says get out while you can. Scripture teaches that judgment is coming, life is brief, and eternity is real. Many of you have already left the sinking ship by confessing Christ, repenting of sin, and being baptized into Him. Live faithfully and keep moving toward heaven.
If you are still on the ship, today is your day to get out. Do not trust tomorrow. Do not trust feelings. Do not trust excuses. Obey the gospel now—confess Christ, repent, and be baptized for the forgiveness of your sins—and walk with Him in faithfulness.
